Cycle Tour of Britain visits scenic Yorkshire September 5, 2024

Yorkshire has become very popular for cycle races including the Tour de France Grand Départ 10 years agoCycling returned to the wonderful scenery of Yorkshire as two of the six stages of the Men's Tour of Britain took place the region.

The 94-mile Stage Two of the tour started in Darlington on Wednesday September 4 but within a few miles entered Yorkshire at  Yarm  to continue through the Cleveland Hills into the  North York Moors  National Park and along northern sections of the Yorkshire Coast.

A Mountain stage moor started at UgglebarnbyCyclists entered Yorkshire up Yarm High Street.Whitby Abbey was on the Tour of Britain RouteThe Riders coasted into Sandsend before the steep ascent of Lythe Bank Among places along the way were  Stokesley ,  Broughton ,  Commondale ,  Danby ,  Lealholm  and  Sleights . There were King of the Mountains stages at  Ugglebarnby  and at Raw Pasture Bank just beyond  Robin Hood's Bay  before the race headeds towards  Whitby and  Sandsend  before another 'Mountain' ascent up  Lythe  Bank. Riding on via  Staithes  and  Loftus  the riders made a circuit via  Brotton ,  Saltburn-by-the-Sea  and  Skelton  returning via Saltburn towards  Marske-by-the-Sea  to the finish at Zetland Park on the  Redcar  seafront. Sprint stages were held at Stokesley and Saltburn.

Stage three of the tour started at Arundel Gate, Sheffield, on Thursday September 5 and covered over 103 miles as it headed from  Sheffield  via  Rotherham  and  Doncaster  to finish at County Way in  Barnsley . The race included King of the Mountains climbs at  Loxley  and  Oughtibridge  near the start and at Hound Hill, near  Worsbrough , not far from the finish in Barnsley.

Also along the route were  Chapeltown ,  Wath upon Dearne ,  Swinton ,  Maltby  and  Tickhill , where there was a sprint stage. The ride continued through  Conisbrough  and  Denaby Main  making a loop around Barnsley via  Royston ,  Darton  and  Penistone .

The race reached the finish of Stage Six at Felixstowe in Sussex on Sunday September 8.
